Stress Score Calculation: What Goes In

See how HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, recent direction, and your personal baseline shape the Body Insights Stress Balance score.

A stress score cannot know whether the strain came from a hard conversation, an infection, a late workout, or a painful night. It can show that your physiology looks more strained than usual.

Body Insights reads HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and recent trend context against your personal baseline. The score summarizes physiological strain and recovery balance, not your emotions.

What does stress score calculation mean?

Stress Balance describes whether available autonomic signals look more settled, mixed, or strained relative to your normal pattern. It is designed to support pacing decisions.

The useful question is not whether one reading is perfect. It is whether the same signal keeps moving in a way that matches your sleep, symptoms, activity, and recovery. Body Insights keeps the underlying rows visible so the headline never has to stand alone.

What goes into the calculation?

Body Insights reads the available inputs from Apple Health and the app's own history. It does not create missing wearable measurements.

Usable signals are normalized against personal history before being combined. Missing inputs are excluded rather than converted into reassuring or alarming values.

What happens when data is missing?

Without enough HRV or resting-heart-rate history, the score has less personal context. The app should show limited coverage instead of borrowing a population average as your normal.

This matters because "not measured" is not the same as "bad." A watch charging overnight, an incomplete Health permission, or a short history can reduce what the calculation knows without saying anything negative about your body.

What can change the result?

Illness, pain, emotional load, dehydration, medication, alcohol, exercise, and sleep can all move HRV or resting heart rate. The score cannot assign cause.

If a result looks surprising, check the input rows first. A single missing night, unusual workout, illness, medication change, travel day, or sensor gap can explain more than the headline number.

What can this calculation not tell you?

This is not a mental-health assessment and cannot diagnose anxiety, burnout, infection, or autonomic disease.

Body Insights is a pattern-reading tool, not a diagnostic device. Bring persistent, severe, or worrying changes to a qualified clinician, especially when the number and how you feel disagree for several days.

Read the reason, not only the number

Read the score beside the HRV, heart-rate, and sleep rows. If several move together, the pattern carries more weight than a single value.

Body Insights reads data that Apple Watch and compatible devices place in Apple Health. The purpose of this page is to make that translation inspectable without publishing gameable score weights or pretending a wearable estimate is a clinical test.
