A short, repeatable note can show whether physical effort, mental work, standing, poor sleep, or another change tends to come before a harder period.

The smallest useful tracker records a clear change and enough context to review it later. This keeps the log usable on a low-energy day.
The CDC says most people recover from mononucleosis in two to four weeks, but fatigue can last several more weeks. Symptoms sometimes last six months or longer. Recovery is not always a straight line, so one difficult afternoon says less than a repeated pattern.
Write an entry when energy drops, rises, or changes in character. You can also add one fixed morning entry if that helps you compare days. Stop there unless more detail changes a decision.
Formal guidance covers fatigue and activity. People living through post-viral illness often notice finer changes first. These can include internal shaking after activity, a shorter upright window, or a different kind of brain fog. Record those changes even when they do not yet have a clean explanation.
What to record when energy changes
Record the time, your usable energy, current symptoms, recent activity, and what you do next. Use the same fields each time.

If a field never helps you change the day, remove it. The goal is a usable pattern, not a complete record of your life.
Track the patterns the community notices first
Community reports can surface useful tracking fields before they appear in a standard diary. Treat them as observations to test against your own pattern, not as a diagnosis.
One current r/EBV thread asks about shaking after activity. Other posts describe recovery that changes by the day. People also ask whether changing symptoms or lab results mean reactivation. Those questions point to optional fields that a basic fatigue scale can miss:
- How long you could sit or stand before the change
- Shaking, buzzing, heaviness, or weakness after activity
- Lightheadedness, heart pounding, or a clear change when upright
- Sore throat, swollen glands, headache, or temperature sensitivity
- Whether the fatigue felt sleepy, heavy, wired, flu-like, or cognitively blank
- How long it took to return to your earlier level
Use your own words. A repeated phrase such as "wired but weak" may be more useful than forcing the experience into a standard symptom list.
Add a later check for delayed fatigue
A later check connects an activity with symptoms that do not appear at once. Add one short update the same evening and another the next morning when needed.
For ME/CFS, the CDC says post-exertional symptoms often worsen 12 to 48 hours after activity. It recommends activity and symptom diaries to help people find personal limits. Fatigue after mononucleosis is not automatically ME/CFS, but the delayed-check method can still show the shape of your own response.
Do not force a cause from one entry. Look for the same response after similar activity on more than one day.
Pair a number with a functional label
A number shows direction, but a functional label shows what that number means today. Record both if a score alone feels vague.
For example, "4 out of 10" could mean "can talk for ten minutes but cannot make a meal." Another person may use "low, medium, high" with a short note about what is possible. Keep your labels stable enough to compare.
Function is often easier to act on than a feeling word. It can help you decide whether to keep a task, split it, ask for help, or move it.
Keep symptoms separate from wearable context
Symptoms answer how you feel. Wearable data adds context about sleep, heart rate, HRV, activity, and time on your feet. Keep the two layers separate before you compare them.
Apple Watch records available data and writes it to Apple Health. A change in resting heart rate or HRV does not explain EBV fatigue by itself. It may still help you see what else changed around a low-energy day.
Start with the symptom entry. Then review the passive data. If they disagree, do not use the watch to overrule how you feel.
Review the pattern once a week
A weekly review should answer one practical question: what tends to happen before a drop, and what seems to make the next period easier or harder?
Group similar entries. Compare desk work with desk work, errands with errands, and social time with social time. Note how long recovery took. Also note when the same activity did not cause a drop, since sleep, timing, breaks, and total load may have differed.
Choose one small adjustment for the next week. You might shorten one task, rest earlier, split a trip, or protect the morning after a higher-load day. Change one thing so the next review stays clear.
A tracker cannot confirm EBV reactivation
A symptom log can show a pattern, but it cannot tell you whether EBV is active or has reactivated. Persistent fatigue needs a wider clinical view.
The CDC says EBV antibody tests need careful interpretation. High antibody levels can remain for years and do not prove a recent infection. The CDC gives further advice when illness lasts more than six months without a confirmed EBV diagnosis. It says other causes of chronic illness or fatigue should be considered.
Bring the log to a clinician if symptoms are new, severe, or changing, or if recovery is not going as expected. The entries can make timing and function clearer. They do not replace an assessment.
