An anomaly means unusual for the available pattern. It does not automatically mean dangerous, diseased, or even wrong.
Body Insights evaluates supported current signals against personal history and flags observations or combinations that are sufficiently unusual for that context. The detector identifies difference, not diagnosis.
What does health anomaly detection mean?
A badge says the available value or pattern sits outside what the model expected from your recent valid history.
The useful question is not whether one reading is perfect. It is whether the same signal keeps moving in a way that matches your sleep, symptoms, activity, and recovery. Body Insights keeps the underlying rows visible so the headline never has to stand alone.
What goes into the calculation?
Body Insights reads the available inputs from Apple Health and the app's own history. It does not create missing wearable measurements.
- Current supported health and recovery features
- A sufficiently stable personal-history window
- Coverage, freshness, and outlier-quality checks
The detector learns the shape of recent valid observations and scores how isolated a new pattern appears. Rules then control whether the result is visible and how cautiously it is worded.
What happens when data is missing?
Too little history or a sparse current record weakens anomaly confidence. Missing values should not themselves become a medical anomaly unless the product explicitly labels a data-quality issue.
This matters because "not measured" is not the same as "bad." A watch charging overnight, an incomplete Health permission, or a short history can reduce what the calculation knows without saying anything negative about your body.
What can change the result?
Illness, travel, medication, stress, sensor error, a new routine, and baseline drift can all create unusual observations.
If a result looks surprising, check the input rows first. A single missing night, unusual workout, illness, medication change, travel day, or sensor gap can explain more than the headline number.
What can this calculation not tell you?
Anomaly detection cannot identify a cause or determine medical urgency. False positives and missed changes remain possible.
Body Insights is a pattern-reading tool, not a diagnostic device. Bring persistent, severe, or worrying changes to a qualified clinician, especially when the number and how you feel disagree for several days.
Read the reason, not only the number
Check which input was unusual and whether it repeats. Pair the signal with symptoms and seek care when the real-world situation warrants it.
Body Insights reads data that Apple Watch and compatible devices place in Apple Health. The purpose of this page is to make that translation inspectable without publishing gameable score weights or pretending a wearable estimate is a clinical test.
