How Body Insights calculates readiness
Body Insights combines only the components with enough data to be useful. These can include overnight glucose stability and autonomic recovery from HRV and resting heart rate. Recent training load and circadian timing can also contribute.
Each component carries its own data confidence. The score uses only the components that are available. A missing CGM does not count as bad glucose. A missing training signal does not become a fake zero. Thin coverage produces limited context instead of a polished answer.
The autonomic part is personal. It reads HRV and resting heart rate against your baseline. It then adds the overnight heart-rate dip and recent direction. Population averages can explain a metric, but your own history shows whether today is unusual.
Is Today’s Capacity a different formula?
No. Today’s Capacity reuses the current readiness score. It changes the way that score is presented and how cautiously the guidance is worded.
Freshness and safety coverage matter. Current illness, symptom, and training context can support more specific guidance. A stale score or missing safety context produces an updating or limited state. Symptoms and illness risk can change the recommendation priority. Body Battery, sleep debt, and training load can do the same. They do not create a second arithmetic score.
This distinction protects the reader from false precision. The number answers "what do the available recovery signals suggest?" The guidance answers "how cautiously should we use that number today?"
What happens when data is missing?
Missing data does not mean poor recovery. Body Insights uses the valid components. It shows lower confidence or limited guidance when coverage is incomplete.
Apple Watch records some signals at intervals, and CGM data is optional. You can still receive a readiness read without glucose data. Too little overnight or baseline data produces a limited state, not an invented score.
What a recovery score cannot tell you
It cannot diagnose illness or guarantee exercise tolerance. It also cannot predict post-exertional malaise before every crash. It is a structured read of the Apple Health signals available that morning.
HRV is useful but depends on context. An open-access review found links across several HRV measures. It also showed that test conditions and the type of stress change the result.
